Anyone who hopes to start an online business must consider what specialized skills need to be learned before undertaking the new venture.

The set of skills that you will need are not very intimidating. However the depth with which you need to be familiar with each of the skill areas depends upon how much of the work you plan to do on your own and how much you want to leave to professionals.

I assume you know about the legal requirements in your jurisdiction (for example, your state in the U.S. or your province in Canada). If not, either check with your own authorities (you’ll find a great deal of information online) or consult an attorney. It is also advisable to check with your insurance representative and your accountant before actually making your business official.

Of course, those issues are important for any business; this article is about those skills necessary for web based enterprise. We’ll look at the knowledge areas that you or someone associated with your business, whether it is you, a partner, an employee or a company with which you contract to perform some of the specialized tasks involved.

Computer Skills: If you know how to use email and a word processing software, you can learn the rest of the technical things rather easily. In the early days of the development of the world wide web, you needed to know computer programming. Now though, there are many software tools that make most things that you need to do quite easy. Of course, if you don’t have a lot of computer knowledge, you will be learning much more about computers along the way, but the best of the ready made tools tend to have excellent manuals or video tutorials. If you are reasonably interested, diligent and willing to spend a bit of money on software, this is really no great worry. As you become more experienced, you will become faster at each computer task.

Search Engine Optimization: This skill set, often referred to as simply SEO, involves knowing how to create and promote your website in such a way that the search engines will be able to find it and that it will show up high in the listings if a web user is searching for a relevant product, service or information that your business offers.

Website Design: Decisions must be made concerning the goals for your website and how the site should look in a way consistent with reaching those goals. Only then does someone need to build the site in a way that maximizes your opportunity to meet the business’s objectives. A word of caution: Designing for the web is definitely not the same as designing for other media, such as print or television. Study other successful websites of businesses similar to yours. Pay particular attention to how easy or difficult it is for the visitor to find the information that she or he is looking for and, most importantly, to perform the desired action (buy a product, request a quote for services, etc.). Usability, not beauty, is the ultimate test of a design.

Writing: There is almost no skill more important in Internet marketing than writing. If you are not a writer, don’t fret. People with lots of experience in writing for the web and with excellent skills are abundant. Writing is one of those tasks that you can hire done rather inexpensively. You can actually find an Internet (or web) writing service that specializes in writing for Internet marketers. However, if you don’t have the resources to hire good writers as often as needed, or if you don’t have the ability to do it yourself, consider another venue for your business.

Patience: Remember that you will not see the money coming in immediately. Sure, there are plenty of scam artists out there that will tell you that they can sell you “secret” information or a magical product that will lead to online riches within a week or a month. The truth is that operating an online business is no different from any other business in that way. It takes time and effort to develop. You can achieve your goals with time and money. You can achieve them faster with more time and more money, but you can’t become wealthy almost instantly. You need to be in this for the long haul in order to build a reliable, lasting, valuable business.

You already know that the Internet has a lot of valuable information available. You probably have also discovered that there are a lot of false statements. The trick is to be able to distinguish one from the other. You can hasten your learning by finding reliable, honest sources. Sometimes such sources have information products that you can buy, which will save you an immense amount of trial and error (and the time that accompanies such trial and error). In fact you can often register for worthwhile free instruction such as a how to start an Internet business course, which also should point you to other valuable resources.
